Preparing for Surgery & Procedure

Preparing for Surgery

Once you and your doctor decide that surgery will help you, you will need to learn what to expect and create a treatment plan for the best results.

Preparing mentally and physically is an important step toward a successful outcome. Understanding the process will help you recover faster with fewer complications.

Working with Your Doctor

Before surgery, your doctor will perform a complete physical examination to ensure you are fit for the procedure.

  • Routine tests like blood tests and X-rays are done before surgery.
  • Discuss medications you are taking with your doctor.
  • Plan for blood replacement if required.
  • Maintain a healthy weight before surgery.
  • Stop medications that increase bleeding risk.
  • Avoid smoking to improve recovery.
  • Treat infections (teeth, bladder, etc.) beforehand.
  • Eat a balanced diet with vitamins and iron.
  • Arrange help for daily tasks.
  • Prepare your home to avoid falls.
  • Use a stable chair with support.

Preparing for Procedure

If you are having day surgery, follow these tips:

  • Have someone to take you home after surgery.
  • Avoid eating or drinking during the journey.
  • Start with light meals after reaching home.
  • Keep the operated area elevated and use ice.
  • Take pain medication before pain becomes severe.
